Kotoko first team resumes training Wednesday, but club declines participation in official competitions

The first team of Asante Kotoko is set to resume training on Wednesday, February 19, their first since putting all football-related activities on hold.

The club put a halt to all activities following the death of fan Francis ‘Nana Pooley’ Frimpong in Nsoatre during the Porcupine Warriors’ Ghana Premier League defeat to Nsoatreman.

However, the Kumasi-based side are set to return to their training base starting on Wednesday.

“After careful consideration and consultations with our medical department, the club has been advised that our senior team should resume training from tomorrow to ensure the physical and mental well-being of our players,” a statement signed by the management read.

“While the pain of recent events still lingers, we recognize the need to maintain the fitness and sharpness of our squad as we continue to demand accountability for the heinous acts committed against our club and our supporters.”

Despite their imminent resumption of training, Kotoko say it has no connection with their stance to participate in active competitions.

“We also want to make it abundantly clear that this decision to resume training does not in any way alter our stance regarding footballing activities. Our position remains unchanged; we will not compete in any official matches until meaningful and decisive actions are taken to secure justice and protect the future of our game,” the statement added.

Last weekend, the club held a one-week memorial observation in honour of Pooley at the Baba Yara Stadium.
