Labour unions urge Employment Minister-designate to prioritise minimum wage negotiations if approved

Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) have called on the Minister-designate for Labor, Jobs, and Employment, Abdul-Rashid H. Pelpuo, to begin discussions on salary and minimum wage for public sector workers without delay.

According to them, any further delay could affect arrears payments, resulting in agitations on the labor front.

The Secretary General of TUC, Joshua Ansah, entreated the minister-designate not to prioritse this when he is approved by parliament.

“As I speak to you, base pay is waiting, minimum wage is waiting, I have written to the ministry to wait for the minister. He should call the tripartite committee for us to meet and determine the minimum wage and the base pay,” Mr Ansah said.

He appealed to the minister-designate not to be quick to run to the National Labour Commission to resolve labour matters.

“The problems are there but there are ways of resolving them, we think that any good leader who will be facing challenges must have that heart to deal with the problem. I can tell you that is part of the anger, because workers were peeved that at any instance they run to the National Labour Commission, it will be better for the minister who has been put in place to ensure that labour relations in this country is cool” he noted

On his part, the Executive secretary of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association (CLOGSAG) appealed to the minister- designate to address what he described as the mess at the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

“They have gone into areas that is not their mandate. They are trying to do auditing, it’s not their mandate, they are trying to create confusion on the labour front,” he alleged.

According to him, “They are trying to migrate employees into other services which is not their mandate and also they call themselves lead negotiator, they are not leader negotiators. Government is the lead negotiator and government mandates them to negotiate, they are not lead negotiators. So he must make sure the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission live up to their mandate so there should be a shake up there” he stated.
