Legon Cities coach hails league dark horses, but cautions against writing off giants

Legon Cities head coach, Samuel Paa Kwesi Fabin, has praised the impressive performances of Ghana Premier League’s lesser-known teams while cautioning against writing off traditional powerhouses, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.

In an exclusive interview with 3Sports’ GPL Xpress show, Fabin highlighted the impressive start of teams like Bibiani GoldStars, Nations, and Samartex, attributing their success to shrewd investments in their squads while he remains cautious about writing off the traditional giants Kotoko and Hearts of Oak.

”We’ve just played nine matches, you can’t write them off. You can’t write Hearts off, and you can’t write Kotoko off but I believe other teams like, Bibiani Gold Stars, Nations FC, Samartex and co are doing very well because I believe they’ve really invested well in their team. In football if you make good investments you get results that’s what I have seen.”

Fabin’s comments underscore the growing competitiveness of the Ghana Premier League, where traditionally dominant teams are facing stiff challenges from emerging forces as investments and smart recruitments are reaping rewards for previously unfancied teams.

Bibiani Gold Stars lead the Ghana Premier League with 19 points, unbeaten this season, while Nations FC trail in second with 16 points. Defending champions Samartex sit sixth with 14. Kotoko’s strong start to the season stalls with two losses and a draw in their last three, as Hearts of Oak regain footing after a slow start.

The Ghana Premier League has long been dominated by Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, with occasional challenges from other traditional powers like Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea, and Ashanti Gold. However, the emergence of teams like Medeama SC Samartex, Bibiani Gold Stars and Nations FC suggests a shifting power dynamic.
