The kings of Gonja and Mamprugu; Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale and the Nayiri, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga have urged their kinsmen to prove to the world that the two kingdoms are peaceful.

According to them, the two kingdoms have the responsibility of protecting the dignity and respect of their two illustrious sons contesting as presidential candidates in the 2024 elections.

“This year is an election year and we must be proud of ourselves that two illustrious sons of
Mamprugu and Yagbon are the two main contenders for Ghana’s Presidency. This is such a huge responsibility to all of us and I implored all to be of good conduct.

“Election 2024 is about Ghana and we have to prove to the whole world that Ghana is capable and can manage its own affairs. The rules and regulations of our electoral process as outlined by the Electoral Commission of Ghana must be strongly adhered to.”

For his part, the North East regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, commended the two kings for their commitment to peace and stability in their respective kingdoms.

He reiterated the need for a peaceful conduct of citizens in the kingdoms.

“Whoever wins this elections, whether Dr Mahamudu Bawumia or former President Johnson Mahama, it is our responsibility as northerners to see it as a win for us and we must be the first to uphold and defend the peace of the country.

“If we misbehave and cause chaos, this opportunity will pass and it will take us decades if not centuries to get another opportunity like this. So let’s prove to the world that we are peaceful people.“

    History of two kingdoms

The two kingdoms have a rich history of peaceful coexistence which dates back to the 17th Century when the founder of the Gonja kingdom Ndewura Jakpa on his expedition from Mande met one of the overlords of Mamprugu who was then aged but full of wisdom.

Their relationship was that of peace, respect and friendliness. After exchanging pleasantries and good counselling from the overlord, Ndewura Jakpa continued his mission to the present day Gonja land.
