NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demo ‘fruitless and unnecessary’ – Nana Boakye

The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has condemned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for their recent demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC), calling it a “fruitless venture” and an “unnecessary move.”

Speaking on Yensempa on Onua FM on September 18, 2024, Nana Boakye stressed that the EC is an independent body with legal authority to audit the voter register, making the NDC’s demand for an external audit redundant.

“For me and the NPP, this is a fruitless venture. It is an unnecessary move,” he said.

He acknowledged that errors could occur, citing an incident in Pusiga where unauthorised voter transfers led to the suspension of the presiding officer involved. However, he questioned the NDC’s sweeping allegations of over 200,000 illegal transfers, insisting that such claims must be backed by evidence.

“Bring evidence, you say no. How can a political party behave in such a manner?” he questioned.

Nana Boakye vowed that the NPP would strongly resist any attempts to undermine the independence of the EC. While he admitted that the EC could opt to audit the register on its own terms, he dismissed the idea of the NDC’s call for an external forensic audit, warning, “We will drag the EC to the Supreme Court if it attempts any forensic audit.”

The NDC organised a protest on September 17, drawing thousands of supporters across all 16 regions of Ghana. The party is pushing for a forensic audit of the voters’ register ahead of the 2024 elections, a demand the EC has rejected as unnecessary.

Critics have described the protest as premature, pointing out that the EC is currently engaged in cleaning the register following the mandatory public exhibition.
