The Ghana Health Service (GHS) says it is not leaving any stone unturned in its efforts to ensure cholera outbreaks become a thing of the past.
Following the outbreak of cholera in the country months back, many lives have been claimed with many more communities struggling to ward off the infection.
The Director General of the GHS, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea says there hasn’t been any more cholera related deaths recorded in the past three weeks.
He hopes that with all stakeholders involved, the outbreak will be curbed in no time.
Speaking to media personnel on the latest regarding the cholera outbreak in the country, Prof Akoriyea noted that the vaccination drive has played a very significant role in the fight.
‘‘We are doing very great when it comes to the cholera. Right now, for the past three weeks we don’t have any deaths. We have been able to do almost 99% of vaccinations and we are now doing surveys to confirm and be sure that we have given to all the population that we targeted.,” he said.
According to him, “We are doing something regarding sanitation to make sure that the sewages are clean. The Regional Director of the Central Region also conducted a cleaning exercise over the weekend. So, all that will help us, we just hope that it is not a one-day thing.”
Since the outbreak of the cholera in parts of the country, in August last year, a total of 6,145 suspected cases have been reported with 719 being the total confirmed cases. 49 lives have been claimed while the affected regions remain Greater Accra, Central, Eastern, Western, and Ashanti.
The Efutu and Agona West districts remain the disease hot spots. Health authorities continue to encourage residents to practice cleanliness at all times.
