ChatGPT is one of the most advanced and popular chatbots in the world, powered by OpenAI’s generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models. ChatGPT can generate natural and engaging responses to a variety of topics and contexts, using its large-scale language understanding and generation capabilities.
However, until recently, ChatGPT had a major limitation: it could not access the internet or any external data sources or services. This meant that ChatGPT could only rely on its internal knowledge and memory, which might be outdated, incomplete or inaccurate. For example, if you asked ChatGPT about the latest news, sports scores or weather forecasts, it would not be able to give you a reliable answer.
That changed on March 23rd 2023, when OpenAI announced support for plugins in ChatGPT. Plugins are tools designed specifically for language models with safety as a core principle, and help ChatGPT access up-to-date information, run computations or use third-party services. Plugins extend the base model with additional features such as real-time internet search, web browsing, code interpretation, and more.
Plugins also enable ChatGPT to interact with various applications and platforms that offer useful functionalities and data. For example, with plugins from Expedia, KAYAK, and OpenTable, you can plan your next trip with ChatGPT by searching for flights, hotels, restaurants, and activities.
With plugins from Instacart, Shopify, and Klarna, you can shop online with ChatGPT by browsing products, comparing prices, and making payments. With plugins from Slack, Zapier, and Speak, you can communicate and collaborate with ChatGPT by sending messages, connecting apps, and learning languages.
OpenAI has provided documentation and open-sourced code for plugin development, as well as a waitlist for interested developers to join.
