The newly elected Chairman of the Council of State, Edward Doe Adjaho has assured Ghanaians that he and his colleagues will make a difference in the history of the Council.
He said they will prove to those calling for the abolishing of the advisory body to the President. that the institution is still relevant.
Mr Adjaho made the pledge on behalf of the members of the Council after they have been sworn-in by President Mahama. The 31-member Council was sworn-in on February 18.
Addressing them, President Mahama tasked the Doe Adjaho-chaired Council to prove the critics wrong.
“In recent times, the Council of State has come under criticism from an expectant public who perceive their work as unsatisfactory and one designed to rubber-stamp executive decisions. Some have even questioned the very relevance of the Council of State and called for it to be scrapped,” President Mahama stated.
This notwithstanding, he expressed belief in the ability of the new members to turn things around.
“I hold that hope that your tenure as Council of State Members will convince those who may doubt the functional necessity about your importance and put to rest any such perceptions,” he urged.
In response, Mr Adjoaho assured President Mahama that they are up to the task ahead.
“It is true many have questioned the relevance of the Council of state as you rightly pointed out. Some have even called for its abolishing, but we want to assure you that this Council will be a Council with a difference,” he declared.
The former Speaker of Parliament added, “I want to assure you on behalf of the Council that we will work as a team. We will support you in the governance structure, in the discharge of our constitutional and statutory responsibilities.”
Mr Adjaho stated that, “We have 3 young people in the Council, the youngest being 32 years old. This is an indication that even as people call for its abolishing, the youth find interest in it.”
He stressed that, “Mr President, you can count of us, day and night we shall respond. We are aware that the country is going through challenges. In the discharge of our duties, we shall give you the necessary advice so you can weather the storm. The 11 members you appointed to the Council, we shall not fail you, and Ghana will succeed.”
