Over 10 forest reserves have been secured so far – Sammy Gyamfi

The Acting Managing Director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Sammy Gyamfi, has asserted that the government has successfully secured over 10 forest reserves that were once heavily targeted by illegal miners.

Speaking ahead of the presentation of the 2025 budget statement and economic policy to Parliament, Mr Gyamfi pointed to significant progress, particularly in securing over ten forest reserves according to him were once strongholds for illegal mining activities, allegedly associated with members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“As we speak, over ten forest reserves have already been secured. These were safe havens for NPP galamsey kempings, but today they are no longer safe havens for them. They are now no-go areas, and it is so refreshing to see that even before that Legislative Instrument (L.I.) is repealed, we are witnessing the government taking the necessary, decisive actions that we’ve all called for,” Gyamfi said.

Speaking to JoyNews Parliamentary correspondent, Kweku Asante, while Gyamfi acknowledged the progress made, he was quick to point out that the battle was far from won.

“I am very impressed with the significant strides made in the galamsey fight so far, but that is not to say we have succeeded, no. There is still room for improvement; we still have a long way to go. But you see, where there is a will, there is a way,” he said, emphasising the importance of sustained political will to achieve lasting change.

Mr Gyamfi also expressed his confidence that the ongoing efforts would lead to eventual success, invoking the words of faith,

“Insha Allah, like the Muslims say, we shall win this fight,” he confidently said.
