The Peoples Democratic Party has announced that the inauguration of its South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee will take place on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at the National Executive Committee Hall, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stated in a press release on Monday that the caretaker committee will oversee PDP activities in the South-South until a new Zonal Executive Committee is elected, in line with the party’s constitution.
The Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had previously issued a restraining order against the PDP and National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dan Orbih, preventing them from holding the zonal congress.
The lawsuit (PHC/551/CS/2025) was filed by PDP members Tonu Ejiogu and Field Nkor from Rivers State.
However, despite the court ruling, the PDP proceeded with the zonal congress on February 22, 2025, in Calabar, Cross River State.
0The electoral committee chairman, Vita Abba, declared Orbih the winner with 174 votes, alongside other newly elected officials, including Alabah Turnah as Secretary, Evelyn Weke as Treasurer, Ijeoma Obani as Financial Secretary, Timothy Okwoche as Organizing Secretary, Iyrneri Briggs as Legal Adviser, Prince Etim Isong as Publicity Secretary, Loveday Abaribote as Auditor, Phenomena Esubok as Woman Leader, and Patrick Asuquo as Youth Leader.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who attended and backed the congress in Calabar, described the South-South as PDP’s strongest base and insisted that no further congress would be held in the zone.
He also reaffirmed Orbih as the National Vice Chairman.
However, four South-South governors distanced themselves from the congress, prompting the PDP’s National Working Committee, led by acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, to reject the outcome.
The NWC subsequently appointed Emma Ogidi as Chairman of a Caretaker Committee on March 7 and fixed April 12, 2025, for a new South-South Zonal Congress.
According to Ologunagba’s Monday statement, the inauguration of the South-South Zonal Caretaker Committee will formally take place at 11 am on March 13, 2025, at the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.
The caretaker committee members include Chief Emmanuel Ogidi as Chairman, Hon. Nicholas Ayuwa, Barr. Godwin Akpan Udonta, Mrs. Bekewei Ashanti, Idehen Ebomoyi, Dame Vivian Ahanmisi, Chief Damiete Herbert-Miller as Secretary, and Dr. Chris Uduoaka as Administrative Secretary.
The NWC urged PDP leaders, stakeholders, and members in the South-South to remain united and committed to the party’s progress, emphasising that the caretaker committee will steer the zone’s affairs until a new executive is elected.
