People are a little stuck in the past – Black Stars coach Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has bemoaned the lack of quality of his team, in comparison to past Black Stars teams, as one of the major setbacks for Ghana.

This comes after the Black Stars failed to pick up a win in September’s internationals, with a loss and a draw against Sudan.

The latter of those results, a 2-0 defeat to Sudan in Libya on Tuesday, puts Ghana on the brink of not making it to the Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) for the first time since 2004.

Otto Addo, who was a member of Ghana’s first-ever team that qualified for the World Cup in 2006, alongside stellar names like Stephen Appiah, Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien among others, advised Ghanaians against comparing the current crop of players to the teams of old.

“Sometimes I think people are a little stuck in the past and we always refer to the past. I can’t compare our players who have been playing Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan. We had all these kind of players. I can’t compare them, with all due respect, to our players now. Maybe they will get there but we are not there now,” he said in his post Sudan presser.

Ghana have struggled for results in 2024, recording two wins in the year and dealing with widespread criticism from fans.

Additionally, the Black Stars have picked up no wins in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, scoring once and garnering two out of a possible nine points.

However, the 49-year-old manager emphasized his trust in his players.

“It is very, very difficult, the players especially when before the game there is so much negativity towards them. If we stick to our strength and are consistent with it to play good football and combine it with our passion, then we can go forward even with this our bitter situation we are in now,” he added.

Ghana plays Niger and Angola before the end of the 2024 international window.
