Political parties, advocates can use my ‘Stop Galamsey’ song for free – Okyeame Kwame

Ghanaian rapper, Okyeame Kwame has granted the permission for his new song on galamsey to be used for free by persons and institutions against the menace.

The rapper who has been a climate change advocate for over 5 years explained that his song “is his little contribution” towards the fight against galamsey which is destroying the earth he loves.

He urged political parties, civil society organisations and media organisations to intensify efforts in the fight against galamsey.

“Music has a way of bringing development in such a subtle way. I have done a galamsey song. This is not a song for money. I recorded live, paid the musicians, nobody pays me anything. This is coming from my heart because I love the earth and galamsey is hurting the earth.

“And everyone can use it. Political parties, advocates and radio stations can use it for free to push Stop Galamsey,” he said in an interview on 3FM Drive, Tuesday, Nov. 12 2024.

The song titled ‘Stop Galamsey’ was released a week ago and has garnered 1.1k views on YouTube as of November 12,2024.

Few months ago, calls for an end to galamsey were intensified with several protests held against the menace. Protesters and advocates urged government to take drastic measures to end illegal mining otherwise known as ‘Galamsey’ in the country.

After several appeal to the government, President Akufo-Addo deployed military officers to galamsey sites to stop the illegal mining activities while also presenting a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to Parliament to revoke the existing law, Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) (Revocation) Instrument. L.I. 2462, that allows mining in forest reserves.

The revocation of LI 2462 will lead to a total ban on mining in forest reserves.
