Residents decry prolonged delay in finding root cause

The Assembly Member for the Kamgbunli community in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region, Dawuda Musa is urging the Fisheries Commission, Environmental Protection Agency, and Water Resources commission to expedite their research findings and release the results.

This comes as the livelihoods of community members, who depend on the Fia, Ebi, and Amanzule rivers for fishing, continue to hang in the balance.

The situation has been exacerbated by the mysterious discovery of rotting fish in these rivers, sparking widespread concern.

Following 3news report on January 11, 2025, regarding the mysterious discovery of rotting fish in the Fia, Ebi, and Amanzule rivers, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, Fisheries Commission, and Resources commission visited the site to collect samples for further investigation and testing.

However, community members are complaining that nearly a month has passed since the officials’ visit, yet they have not received any update on the findings or the cause of the problem.

“The issue with our three rivers remains unresolved. The Water Resources Commission, Fisheries Commission, and Environmental Protection Agency all came to conduct their investigations. We are now eagerly awaiting the results. According to the Water Resources Commission, they have completed their part and we expect to receive the findings soon,” he said.

According to the Assembly Member for the area, Dawuda Musa, despite the community members’ compliance with the directive to halt fishing activities in the rivers, accessing drinking water and alternative sources of livelihood has been a significant challenge.

“Compliance is high; the community is adhering to the directive, and the authorities are also enforcing it. However, it’s not easy for the community members, as their livelihoods depend on the rivers. You can imagine the hardship they’re facing, but despite the challenges, they are cooperating,” he stated.

Dawuda Musa is urging the relevant agencies to expedite their research process, as the prolonged delay continues to jeopardize the livelihoods of community members who depend heavily on the Fia, Ebi, and Amanzule rivers for their fishing activities.

“We are appealing to the authorities to expedite the release of the test results, so we can determine the way forward. Currently, the fisherfolk are suffering, and as a community, we empathize with them. Unfortunately, the situation is beyond our control.”
