Samuel Awuku resigns as NLA Director-General to focus on new MP duties

Samuel Awuku has officially resigned from his position as Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) following his recent election as the Member of Parliament for the Akuapem North constituency.

In a letter addressed to President John Dramani Mahama and dated January 13, 2025, Awuku expressed his intention to focus fully on his parliamentary responsibilities.

Awuku, who was appointed as the Director-General of the NLA in August 2021, stated that his resignation takes immediate effect and requested that a suitable replacement be appointed to ensure a smooth transition.

“I have been elected as the Member of Parliament for the Akuapem North constituency and have been duly sworn in to represent my constituents. In the light of this new responsibility, I wish to focus my efforts on serving as a Member of Parliament,” Awuku wrote in the letter.

Awuku’s appointment as NLA Director-General was confirmed by the Public Services Commission in July 2022, and he has been credited with introducing reforms aimed at improving revenue generation and efficiency at the NLA.

However, his departure from the role comes amid a broader reshuffle within state institutions following the change in government.

President Mahama, who recently took office, has embarked on a series of changes within public institutions.

His administration has been working to appoint new heads of various agencies and institutions to align with the government’s policy direction.

The resignation of Samuel Awuku is seen as part of this ongoing transition. His decision to step down is in line with the trend of politically exposed persons taking up elected roles and relinquishing their administrative positions.

In the resignation letter, Awuku expressed his gratitude to the President and the staff of the NLA, saying, “I take this opportunity to wish you well in all your endeavours.”
