U-17 WAFU Championship: Ghana’s AFCON hopes dashed after 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso

Ghana’s hopes of making the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations has ended following a 2-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the semi-finals of the U-17 WAFU Zone B Championship.

Joseph Narbi’s goal for Ghana was sandwiched by a brace from Burkina Faso’s star Asharaf Tapsoba.

The visitors needed just 12 minutes to find the breakthrough. A mistake from Ghana’s backline gave Tapsoba a chance to put the ball into the open net and he made no mistake, silencing the huge crowd at the University of Ghana Sports stadium.

Laryea Kingston’s side upped the pressure and were rewarded in the 27th minute. Joseph Narbi took the ball at the edge of the penalty area and curled one into the top corner.

The game remained in the balance until a lapse by Ghana’s defence allowed Tapsoba to go through on goal and place it beyond Emmanuel Armah’s reach.

The Burkinabes held on afterwards to earn a place in the final of the competition. The result means that Ghana have now missed three consecutive editions of the U-17 AFCON, a big blow to Laryea Kingston and the rest of the team.
