Voters’ register discrepancies: Protest is our only option, going to court won’t give us the desired outcome – Edudzi Tameklo

Director of Legal Affairs of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo has objected to the idea of a legal redress to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to allow a forensic audit of the voters’ register.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 on Monday, September 16, Edudzi Tameklo referenced the outcome of the 2020 election petition where the NDC lost its case against the EC, stressing that the court won’t grant the party the outcome it desires.

“What else has citizens left with than to go on to the streets to protest because the court won’t give you the outcome,” he said.

The party after identifying several challenges with the voter’s register, requested for an audit of the register but the EC disallowed the request.

Following this, the NDC announced that it will embark on a nationwide protest on September 17 to demand a forensic audit of the voter’s register.

Edudzi Tameklo believes the party is left with only one option – to protest, as a court case against the EC back in 2020 yielded no result.

“The last time when we took the Electoral Commission to the Supreme Court, the occasion came for the Electoral Commission to explain to Ghanaians why it kept making errors to the declaration of the results, the court more or less refused the application for the EC to testify.

“We thought that process would have enhanced the level of accountability. That in that occasion the court was nowhere to be found. When you have such a situation it emboldens the EC to think that they are above the law.

However, the EC has said it is willing to engage the NDC to collectively identify the issues raised in the voter’s register.
