We are not brothers, Afenyo – Dafeamekpor fumes over outstanding parliamentary seat results

Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi in the Volta Region, has strongly criticised the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over the outcome of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) recollation of results for nine contested parliamentary seats.

The EC declared the New Patriotic Party (NPP) winners in seven out of the nine constituencies, a development that has left the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) dissatisfied.

Speaking to TV3 on Saturday, December 21, while the recollation process was ongoing at the EC’s Greater Accra regional office, Mr Dafeamekpor accused Afenyo-Markin and the NPP of manipulating the process.

Some of these lies, Afenyo should stop this conduct. He should stop fabricating stories to spice up his press conferences. Today he is telling us to cool down, but when he lost, did he cool down? He went to bring Fanteakwa North from Eastern Region to Tesano and got it declared for him,” Mr Dafeamekpor alleged.

The South Dayi MP described the process as a “charade” and expressed frustration over what he perceived as a disregard for legal procedures.

When a matter is in court, don’t you respect the court process? Today, Afenyo is granting a press conference, giving praises to an outcome of exercises that are subject before the Supreme Court. And he is telling me to take it in good faith and that we are brothers. We are not brothers, Afenyo, we are not!”

Mr Dafeamekpor further warned of political retribution, stating, “They may be in government, but they are no longer in power. The power has left them and is now transitioning to us. When we get the power, we will show them where power lies.”

Majority accuses Minority of being disingenuous over mini-budget issues

    Background

The remarks were in response to a press conference by Afenyo-Markin following the EC’s announcement of seven victories for the NPP in the recollation of parliamentary results. The Effutu MP called on the NDC to accept the results, describing the NPP’s wins as legitimate.

The contested seats include Nsawam Adoagyiri, Obuasi East, Tema Central, Ahafo Ano North, Okaikwei Central, Ahafo Ano South West, and Techiman South—all of which were declared in favour of the NPP.

Some of these constituencies had earlier been declared for the NDC after the December 7 elections, prompting legal challenges and a directive from the High Court for recollation.
