We are not cowards; nobody can stop us from being sworn in as MPs – Baba Sadiq warns

The Okaikwei Central parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Sadiq Abdulai, has strongly asserted that he will be sworn in as a member of the 9th Parliament on January 6th, despite his earlier victory being overturned by the Electoral Commission (EC).

According to him, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, cannot subvert the will of the people by re-collating results in favour of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He stated emphatically that the NDC candidates whose victories have been overturned cannot be prevented from assuming their legitimate roles, stressing that none of them are cowards.

On December 6, the IGP, the CDS, not even Nana Addo, if Jean Mensa is minded, she herself will step down in Parliament on the 6th. We won the elections credibly. On behalf of myself, on Dome Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, Tema Central and Obuasi East. This is a strong warning to them.

Sadiq also issued a stern warning to the Majority Leader and MP for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stating:

If this is what you wanted to achieve, to be retained as a minority leader, you failed. You will not be retained. We are not cowards in this country. We were not born to be cowards. The blood that runs through our veins in the NDC is the blood of revolution. That revolution starts on 6th January.

He added that the party will not be intimidated by a state of emergency, indicating that he will be present in Parliament:

We are not afraid of the state of emergency. Nobody, I repeat nobody can scare us with a certain state of emergency. Nana Akufo-Addo is going, he’s the outgoing President of the country. Dr Bawumia has lost, the IGP doesn’t have any locus. Jean Mensa cannot choose for Ghanaians who they want to be their MP. We worked hard to be voted for. Every single seat that we won will be sworn into Parliament.

The controversial re-collation held at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday, 21 December, saw the NPP win 7 out of the 9 disputed constituencies, with two suspended.

    The results include:

    • Okaikwei Central: Baba Sadiq’s earlier victory was overturned in favour of the incumbent MP, Patrick Yaw Boamah of the NPP.

    • Tema Central: NDC’s Ebi Bright’s victory was overturned in favour of the NPP’s Charles Forson.

    • Obuasi East: NPP’s Patrick Boakye-Yiadom narrowly defeated Samuel Aboagye of the NDC.

    • Techiman South: NPP’s Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah retained his seat, securing victory over Christopher Beyere Baasongti of the NDC.

    • Ahafo Ano South West: NPP’s Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah defeated Sedik Abubakar of the NDC.

    • Ahafo Ano North: The NPP’s Nana Agyemang-Prempeh won over Kwasi Adusei of the NDC.

    • Nsawam-Adoagyiri: The incumbent MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, retained his seat, beating Amenorpe Philbert Fummey of the NDC.

Meanwhile, results for the Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North constituencies were suspended by the EC due to unresolved issues.
