Chairman of the Western Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Desmond Cudjoe, has made a promising commitment to the constituents of various constituencies in the region.
He assured them that their voices will be heard, and their concerns will be documented and presented to parliamentary candidates who emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.
At a gathering in Shama Constituency, Cudjoe explained that the Association’s Manifesto Project aims to compile both hard and soft copies of constituents’ concerns and suggestions. This comprehensive approach ensures that the elected representative understands the major concerns of the people.
The Shama Constituency in Ghana’s Western Region is a swing constituency that has seen both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) take the seat more than twice.
This Constituency has a significant voter population of over 65,000, making it a crucial area for both parties.
As the December 7, 2024, general elections draw near, excitement builds in the Shama Constituency. The 2024 elections pit NDC’s Emilia Arthur, a Former District Chief Executive and Deputy Western Regional Minister, against NPP’s Isaac Kwamina Afful. Constituents are eager to cast their votes to choose their next leader.
The Ghana Journalists Association Western Regional Chapter Manifesto Project themed “Harnessing Digital Journalism for Informed Political Dialogue and Manifesto Scrutiny”, aims to empower journalists and promote critical analysis of political manifestos.
As part of this project, the GJA brought together constituency executives and party supporters from Ghana’s two major political parties – the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This gathering provided a unique opportunity for dialogue and scrutiny of the parties’ manifestos, fostering informed discussion among stakeholders.
The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has made significant strides in engaging with local constituencies, successfully bringing together stakeholders from Sekondi and Effia constituencies.
Mr Desmond Cudjoe emphasized the importance of listening to community concerns and their developmental issues.
“Today, we’ve gathered to listen to your concerns and developmental issues. We’ll document and compile all your concerns into both hard and soft copies, creating a comprehensive guide for parliamentary candidates”.
“This will serve as a reminder to the elected representative, ensuring they remain aware of the needs and priorities of their constituents.” He explained.
The GJA hopes to ensure that parliamentary candidates remain accountable to the needs of the people.
Many constituents who attended the meeting expressed concerns about their party leadership, both past and present, citing the lack of development in their area as a major issue.
This sentiment suggests that the constituents feel their party leaders have not effectively addressed their needs or implemented sufficient development projects
Plumber Ibrahim Moro is speaking out about the slow pace of development in his constituency, particularly in Inchaban, which he notes, “this is the busiest town and a significant revenue generator and yet we can’t see any tangible projects to that effect so we are urging the next Member of Parliament to take action and drive growth in the area. As we speak, there are many construction projects in Ghana which have been left unfinished, negatively impacting the community’s quality of life.”
Moro’s concerns highlight the need for effective leadership and representation to address these challenges and unlock Inchaban’s potential.
Auntie Bee, a market woman at the Inchaban market said “we were expecting to use the market which was long time, but unfortunately the contractor has abandoned the site and is nowhere to be found.”
“We are pleading with the Assembly to expedite the process for the contractor to return to site,” she appealed.
Other residents of Inchaban, like Peter, are calling for relief from chronic traffic congestion. “There’s constant traffic from 3pm onwards along the entire highway from Inchaban to Sekondi Junction,’ Peter said. ‘We would greatly appreciate an alternative route or the dualization of the road to ease the daily gridlock”
Otis Dentu, a representative from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is commending the Association for their outstanding work. He’s urging them to keep up the fantastic initiative even after the elections.
Otis highlighted the NDC’s achievements in the constituency, emphasizing that most of the developmental projects were completed under their government.
Key Projects Include:
– School Infrastructure: Many schools were built or renovated by the NDC
– Other Developmental Projects Documented in the book “For the Records,” which showcases the projects undertaken by the previous NDC government
He appealed to the constituents to vote for someone who can bring more development to the area. Additionally, Otis stressed the importance of peace before, during, and after the elections, promoting harmony and stability.
Emmanuel Mac Ackon, the representative from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), congratulated the GJA and urged his party supporters to refrain from removing rival parties’ posters, condemning it as a barbaric act. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, saying, “Let the peace we have experienced together for long maintain; we should let this election not separate us.”
Ackon also highlighted the benefits of voting for NPP, stating that it will bring more development to the constituency. His message promotes unity and peaceful elections, while also outlining the NPP’s vision for progress and growth.
