What Mahama presented ‘was not the true state of the economy’- Dr Stephen Amoah

Dr. Stephen Amoah, former Deputy Minister of Finance, has raised concerns over the accuracy of President John Dramani Mahama’s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), delivered on Thursday.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 1 with Samson Lardy, Dr. Amoah criticised the address, stating that it did not reflect the true state of Ghana’s economy.

“What he gave was not the true state of the economy. The true state of the economy cannot be described by just the energy sector component, in terms of nominal debts—this is not true,” he said.

“You can ask any professor in the world,” he added.

Dr. Amoah, who served as Deputy Finance Minister during the previous administration, expressed doubt over the economic claims made by President Mahama. He argued that the address presented an overly optimistic view of the nation’s economic situation, which, in his view, did not align with the realities on the ground.

“The President only mentioned inflation, which is around 23%, but he left out 15.4%. Why did he do that? He couldn’t have just picked one area and claimed the entire economy is in a good state,” he said.

President Mahama in the SONA presentation in parliament expressed a deep concern over the state of the nation, stating that Ghana’s economy is in crisis and citizens are experiencing severe hardships.

He insisted that urgent measures were needed to address the economic downturn.

“The state of our nation is not good. Our economy is in crisis and our people are suffering,” President Mahama stated.
