As the December 7 elections inches closer, the Zongo traditional council of Chiefs is admonishing followers of political parties especially the zongo youth to conduct a clean and violent-free campaigns.
In almost all the previous elections, most areas marked as hotspot are mostly situated in Zongo communities.
Recent fighting incident between supporters of ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Maamobi- Zongo in Accra as well as Ejura in the Ashanti region has come as a concern to leadership in Zongo communities.
For this reason, opinion leaders and chiefs want the zongo youth to refrain from any form of political violence.
At a press conference in Kumasi, the Zongo Traditional Council of Chiefs indicated that ” the essence of politics is to express divergent views and champion for development but not to create division and destablise peace.
“We wish to remind all Zongo Muslims and non-muslims that we are one people, hence, we should not allow politics to divide us”, Alhaji Abdul Mumin Abubakar Ali, Secretary of the group stressed.
The Muslims leadership emphasized on the need to preserve the peace we are enjoying as we go into the elections.
“While it is important to vote on December 7, we should do so peacefully and abide by the rules and regulations governing the electoral process because nothing about politics is worth dying for”, Alhaji Abubakar Ali noted.
The group wants a change in narrative about the zongo youth, thus, urging party activists to tolerate and respect views of each other for a peaceful election.
Whilst charging electorates to comport themselves, the Zongo leadership also entreated the Electoral Commission to conduct the elections in a free, fair, and transparent manner to guarantee the credibility of the results.
