State institutions are inefficient because of political interference – Gyampo

A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has criticized the inefficiencies in state institutions in Ghana, attributing the challenges to political interference and poor leadership.

Speaking to Alfred Ocansey on TV3’s the Keypoints on Saturday, January 11, 2024, about the issue, Prof. Gyampo highlighted how government institutions in other parts of the world, such as South Africa, operate efficiently, contrasting them with the struggles of similar institutions in Ghana.

“In South Africa, government schools are well-run and highly regarded. Parents are eager to send their children to these schools. However, here in Ghana, government-run institutions often fail to perform effectively unless they are privatized. This reflects deeper challenges within the system,” he explained.

Prof. Gyampo emphasized that the inefficiencies in Ghana’s government institutions are not necessarily inherent but are often linked to the caliber of leadership and political meddling.

“The problem is often the kind of people we appoint to manage these institutions. If someone is appointed and genuinely wants to work, they are frequently hampered by political interference. When they resign in frustration, another person comes in and faces the same challenges,” he said.

He lamented the culture of political meddling, noting that the cycle of interference hinders progress and creates a lack of continuity in government institutions.

“When you appoint someone who wants to implement real change, but politicians interfere, the person eventually gives up. The next person who takes over may also be ineffective due to this recurring issue,” Prof. Gyampo added.

He called for a re-evaluation of leadership appointments and a reduction in political interference to ensure that government institutions can run effectively without the need for privatization.

The comments from Prof. Gyampo underscore the need for reforms in governance and leadership to improve the performance of public institutions in Ghana.
